VEHICLE TRACKING SYSTEM AT HOSPET STEEL LTD.

Client : Hospet Steel Limited. Koppal, Hospet Dist., Karnataka.

The Core Problem

Dumpers carry iron ore from mines situated at Sandur, Karnataka to the Hospet Steel Plant located at Hospet, Karnataka around 70 kms away from mines. As per the calculation goes each Dumper should make three trips to & fro in a day. In reality, they are making one trip in a day. This led to a serious drain on available resources and also contributed to enhanced capital costs with very low returns for the Company.

Several factors contribute to this, but the management is unable to identify the reasons in absence of real-time and factual inputs.

VTS was expected to provide these inputs so as to enable the management take proper steps to further enhance the capacity of each dumper and thereby contribute to a better and optimized management of the resources. In the long run, this represents the first step in a total SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT Solution for the client.

Objective

Tracking precise location of vehicle [dumper] on the road for following benefits;
Reduce time spent at unauthorized locations.
Monitor Zones to view information by exception.
Reduce or eliminate personal business on company time.
Curtain unauthorized use of the vehicles.
Have a real-time and factual input on vehicle performance.

System Overview

KNVL-GIS has seamlessly converged wireless
communications and the Internet with global
positioning (GPS) technology on GIS platform
to link vehicles to an unlimited world of wireless
vehicle services. This was achieved through the
a seamless integration of:

Land base development using DGPS survey.

Software: Arc IMS, Arc View, Tracking Analyst
from ESRI.

Hardware: Black box containing GPS receiver, on-board processor & mobile radio transceiver or modem.

GIS Input

The roads that link the Hospet Steel plant and Iron ore mines at Sandur have been mapped with DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System) survey. Along with this a flank data (Garages, Hotels, STD Booths, Petrol Pumps etc.), Obstruction data (Bridges, Culverts, Octroi Posts etc.) also have been collected to meet the needs of LBS (Location Based Services). The map is Georefrenced with DGPS coordinates for positional accuracy.

Hardware Input

The Black Box: which contains mobile radio transceiver or modem, a GPS receiver, and a GPS antenna. This Black box transmits GPS data to a Base Station in the form of SMS.
